Discover it® Student Cash Back

This card is built for students starting a credit history, not for people who already have strong credit. Discover says no credit score is required to apply, though they may use one if you have it. There is no deposit, this is a real unsecured credit card from day one, not a prepaid or debit card, and not a loan: you borrow and you pay it back every month. You earn 5% cash back in categories that rotate each quarter when you activate, up to the quarterly maximum, and 1% on everything else. As of Sep 4, 2026 the purchase APR is 0% for the first 6 months, then 16.49% to 25.49% variable, and there is no annual fee. The card also carries a $100 statement credit welcome offer and Discover's Cashback Match, which doubles all the cash back you earn in your first 365 days.

Discover it® Student Cash Back Review
Discover it Student Cash Back is built for students opening one of their first credit cards. This review covers how the 5% rotating categories work, what the $100 welcome offer and Cashback Match actually pay out, and what Discover does not publish on this card's page.
How You Earn
Earning follows the same quarterly rhythm as Discover's other it cards. Each quarter has a 5% category you activate, and everything else earns 1%.
- Activation is free, in the app or online, once each quarter
- Discover's official page for this card does not publish a dollar cap for the 5% category, check the app or your card agreement for the current quarterly maximum
- Purchases in the 5% category before you activate, or after you hit the cap, still earn 1%
| Category | Earn rate |
|---|---|
| Rotating quarterly categories, activated | 5% up to the quarterly maximum |
| Rotating categories, not activated or over the cap | 1% |
| All other purchases | 1% |
The $100 Welcome Offer
New cardholders can earn a $100 statement credit after spending $300 in purchases in the first 3 months. Discover calls this a limited time offer, so it is worth confirming it is still live before you apply.
- The offer is tied to applying from the card's page, it may not be available if you navigate away first
- Existing or previous cardholders are not eligible if they received a new cardholder bonus on this product in the last 48 months
- No minimum purchase size beyond the $300 total
Unlimited Cashback Match
At the end of your first 365 days as a cardholder, Discover matches all the cash back you earned, dollar for dollar, automatically. There is no cap.
- The match posts to your rewards account within two billing periods after your first year ends
- It only counts cash back that has actually processed, some late posting transactions can fall outside the match window
- Statement credits and rewards transferred in from another Discover or Capital One deposit account do not count toward the match
Building Credit as a Student
This is not a secured card, there is no deposit to put down, and it is not a debit card or a loan. It is a real unsecured credit card: you borrow against a credit line and pay the balance back every month. Discover says no credit score is required to apply, though they may use one if you have it.
- Responsible use, like paying on time and keeping balances low, is what actually builds your credit, the card itself does not guarantee a better score
- Late payments and other negative activity count against you the same way they would on any credit card
- There is no separate graduation step to a different product, the account works as a standard card from the start
What Discover Doesn't Publish Here
The official card page covers the annual fee, the purchase APR, and the rewards structure, but it does not list every number. Balance transfer APR, cash advance APR and fee, late payment fee, and the foreign transaction fee are not shown on this page as of Sep 4, 2026.
- Check Discover's cardmember agreement or your account after approval for the numbers not shown here
- If you plan to transfer a balance or travel abroad with this card, confirm those fees before you rely on the card for either
